The Heart of Another is a Dark Forest
Restless and Rawcus
Melbourne Fringe Festival 2008
Saturday 27th September 1pm
I saw this piece before I went to Electrofringe and will talk about it briefly here now.
Restless, a well respected dance company from Adelaide using dancers with and without disabilities teamed up with Melbourne based Rawcus for collaboration which yielded incredible results. I did not see Rawcus’ show last year at the MIAF but was reliably told that it was a killer show. I am aware of both Kate Sulan (Rawcus) and Ingrid Voorendt’s (Restless’s) work so I was excited to see what this collision of companies would cause.
And collision is a good word for it – because it seemed they based a lot of the show on a first meeting between the companies in which they allowed them to meet in the space at Dancehouse (Melbourne) and form their own relationships through movement and connection.
I was moved to tears many times during this work, and I really don’t know why. The simplicity of image supported by great sound (Jethro Woodward), lighting (Richard Vabre) and design (ooo errr, don’t have that in front of me) meant that the performers merely needed to stand on stage and the floodgates were opening.
I loved this show and hope it gets another outing.
