The City
More people now live in urban than in non-urban areas, this is the first time in Earth’s history that this has happened. This is only going to grow. How we deal with each other and our environment in the city will become a key theme of this century.
In 2010 I was the Director of Visible City, a project which brought together 11 artists from Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia to ‘make visible the city’. Drawing inspiration from Italo Calvino, the Situationists, Socially engaged art and Melbourne itself, we worked for three weeks over the period of the Melbourne Fringe Festival to create over 40 live art works for the streets.
Also in 2010, Wayfarer Version 2.0 (Urban Agents) was launched at the Arts Centre Melbourne. This work tagged interventions to sites across the inner city. Disappearing Acts, a theatre work without any actors asks for submissions from the city we create the work in and asks them to reveal their vision of their city. Kelly Ryall and myself then remix/re-use their material to create new meanings.
