What are rules?
How do they operate in ones lives?
I used to think that I had no rules, that although I lived within some sort of moral code handed down to me from my parents I had no hard and fast rules by which I lived by. Is this normal?
Is this normal in a secular contemporary existence?
I think those people living within a religious structure would be much more used to living this way.
So I have come to new work working with Olivia Crang, Clair Korobacz, Tristan Meecham and Emily Sexton looking at rules in performance. Trying to be as truthful on stage, not overloading actions with psychology but focusing on real activity. What we found was a space which was open, kinaesthetic and live. The way that the work was performed and also needed to be viewed was something we discovered along the way as well. Is this work for the theatre, the gallery or somewhere else? I am not sure yet, but I do know that rules play a key role in what I am doing.
