Wow what a super few days in Hobart I had last month as a guest of Salamanca Arts Centre.

I was one of the workshops leader for the HyPe (Hybrid Performance) Workshops that is part of a three year plan to invigorate the hybrid arts in Tasmania.

Deborah Pollard was leading the weekend workshops and Ryk Goddard and I led two evening quick-fire sessions.

This session in Hobart got me thinking about hybrid practice and dramaturgy in this type of work. If you have no history or tradition (as dramaturgy in the theatre does) then what are you pinning the thinking on? Bringing a set of rules from inside another artform and applying it to another may have no relevance. How do you view work when every time you come at it, you have to not only learn the language it speaks as well as pulling it apart critically.

One pearl of wisdom i got from an NYID ‘meetings and conversations’ day of talking i went to a few years ago was that the only thing that you can rely on is the ‘transaction between the work and the audience’.

In any case, I was pleased to lead the workshop as it is interesting to remember how much you know.
