I have spent the day thinking about my impact on the earth. It is the first day back in Melbourne after being in Perth and the experience is massively different.
Of course, I have to take into account the fact that I was away from my home and had to live in a place that was chosen based on the price of the rent. However my sustainability experience of here and in Perth was quite different.
In Maylands where I was staying the local council only recycled plastic containers of the 1, 2 and 3 type but Darebin Council recycles all six types of PET plastic. I saw an advert on the tv tonight for a new Victorian govt iniative called target 155 which aims for every household to limit their water useage to 155 litres per day. And Sustainability Victoria which has a great website is really clear about waste, recycling and ideas for homes and ‘solar cities’.
In the end this project of mine is not about conversion of others or trying to change the policy of government or business, it is about my own body and its impact on my local environment. Having said this – it is very difficult for me to try and have a zero footprint if there are not the resources to assist me.
For instance at CIA studios where I was working in Perth for the past three months I could only recycle paper. This was the only recycling bin for a three building complex run by the Department of Education and Training (WA) where there are (I imagine) over a hundred employees.
With the help of my local and state governments I can hopefully create a household that can limit its impact almost as much as BedZED in London.
