Two Fridays ago I found myself swaying and bobbing my head to the incredibly tight stylings of Diafrix at the Corner Hotel. On a very wet and freezing cold night in Melbourne I found some warmth.

I have been watching Diafrix since they started out at concerts on the lawn at Footscray Community Arts Centre a number of years back. And boy they have moved so far since then….

As i looked around at the Corner I could see one of the most diverse crowds i have seen in Australia – Indians, Islanders, Chinese, Africans, Whiteys and everything in between (including one older gentleman who was dancing so hard he was either going to get punched in the head or have a heartattack).

While on stage, a trio of African migrants just doing their stuff…not wallowing in the fact of how far they have come but just delivering what they do to a happy crowd. Nothing more needed to be said about the role that migrants and refugees play in Australian society.

But perhaps to really ram it home we need some Middle eastern and African football players to break into the Socceroos team and propel us into the semi finals like the German team has. Maybe then we can get past this ‘STOP THE BOATS’ nonsense.
